Lakhs and crores vs millions and billions
India (and, in everyday speech, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) groups large numbers differently. After the first thousand, commas fall every two digits instead of every three: 1,00,000 rather than 100,000. A lakh is one hundred thousand and a crore is ten million (one hundred lakh).
| Zeros | Indian figures | Indian words | International figures | International words |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 1,000 | one thousand | 1,000 | one thousand |
| 4 | 10,000 | ten thousand | 10,000 | ten thousand |
| 5 | 1,00,000 | one lakh | 100,000 | one hundred thousand |
| 6 | 10,00,000 | ten lakh | 1,000,000 | one million |
| 7 | 1,00,00,000 | one crore | 10,000,000 | ten million |
| 8 | 10,00,00,000 | ten crore | 100,000,000 | one hundred million |
| 9 | 1,00,00,00,000 | one hundred crore | 1,000,000,000 | one billion |
| 10 | 10,00,00,00,000 | one thousand crore | 10,000,000,000 | ten billion |
| 11 | 1,00,00,00,00,000 | ten thousand crore | 100,000,000,000 | one hundred billion |
| 12 | 10,00,00,00,00,000 | one lakh crore | 1,000,000,000,000 | one trillion |
Above 99 crore, amounts are counted in crores: one hundred crore, one thousand crore, one lakh crore. The older names “arab” (100 crore) and “kharab” (10,000 crore) are rarely used today.
Spelling rules worth knowing
- Hyphens: twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen; nothing else does (three hundred, not three-hundred).
- Singular units: five hundred, two thousand, ten lakh, twelve crore, three million. No “s” after a number.
- “And”: British, Indian and most Commonwealth English write “one hundred and five”; US English usually writes “one hundred five”.
- Common misspellings: forty (not fourty), ninety, nineteen, twelve, eighteen (one “t”).
- Zero: on a cheque, a whole amount is often finished with “only” or, in the US and Canada, “and 00/100”.
Numbers in words on a cheque
On a cheque the spelling rules are the same, but the goal is to leave no room for changes: start at the far left, capitalise if you like, finish with “only” (or the cents as a fraction in North America), and draw a line through the space left over. In most countries, if the words and figures disagree, the words are legally the amount payable, which is why banks look at them closely.
| Figures | British / Commonwealth style | US / Canada style |
|---|---|---|
| 105.00 | One hundred and five only | One hundred five and 00/100 |
| 1,250.75 | One thousand two hundred and fifty pounds 75p | One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 |
| ₹1,50,000.00 | One lakh fifty thousand only | Not used: rupee cheques in India are written in lakhs and crores |
Each country has its own conventions for the currency word, cents and crossing. See the guide for yours:
Frequently asked questions
How many zeros are in a lakh and a crore?
A lakh has five zeros (1,00,000 = one hundred thousand). A crore has seven zeros (1,00,00,000 = ten million). Ten lakh is one million, and one hundred crore is one billion.
Is it “lakh” or “lakhs”?
After a number, formal writing and cheques use the singular: “five lakh”, “twelve crore”, just as you write “five thousand”, not “five thousands”. “Lakhs” is common in speech and in phrases like “lakhs of rupees”.
Is it “forty” or “fourty”?
Forty. Four, fourteen and four hundred keep the “u”, but forty does not. Ninety keeps the “e”, and twelfth, eighth and ninth are other common traps.
Should I write “and” in numbers, like “one hundred and five”?
British, Indian and most Commonwealth English put “and” after hundreds (“one hundred and five”). US English usually leaves it out (“one hundred five”) and keeps “and” for the cents on a check. Both are correct; be consistent.
Do numbers like twenty-one need a hyphen?
In standard written English, yes: compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen. On cheques many people skip the hyphens, and banks accept either as long as the words are clear and match the figures.
How do I write 1.5 million in words?
One million five hundred thousand (1,500,000). In the Indian system the same amount is fifteen lakh (15,00,000).
